Columbus, Ohio — A Democratic candidate for Ohio attorney general is facing intense criticism after releasing a video in which he said he intends to “kill Donald Trump” through the legal application of the death penalty following a hypothetical conviction.
Former Ohio state Rep. Elliot Forhan made the remarks in a Facebook video posted Tuesday, stating that his comments referred to securing a jury conviction under due process and carrying out capital punishment. While framed as a legal scenario, the language immediately drew condemnation from Republicans, who described it as dangerous and inflammatory.
Ohio State Auditor Keith Faber, a Republican candidate for attorney general, said the remarks disqualify Forhan from holding statewide office and called on Ohio Democrats to denounce them. GOP gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy echoed that demand, arguing that silence from Democratic leaders amounted to implicit approval. As of Wednesday morning, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton had not publicly addressed the comments.
Republican lawmakers also cited Forhan’s past behavior, including disciplinary action during his time in the Ohio House, when party leadership stripped him of committee assignments over alleged harassment and intimidation. Critics pointed to prior social media posts celebrating the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as part of a broader pattern.
Forhan served one term in the Ohio House from 2023 to 2024 and finished third in the 2024 Democratic primary, losing his reelection bid. His comments now threaten to further inflame an already contentious attorney general race in a state where President Trump remains politically popular.
