Shaver Lake, California – A man was rescued from a vault toilet tank at a California campground Saturday after officials said he fell in while trying to retrieve a pair of sunglasses.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. at Camp Edison near Shaver Lake, about 50 miles northeast of Fresno. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said the man fell into the chemical storage tank beneath a non-flushing campground toilet and remained there for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Rescue crews from Cal Fire, law enforcement officers, and Camp Edison staff responded. Officials said the man was safely removed, decontaminated, and did not suffer serious injuries.

Sgt. Chris Tullus told local station KSEE/KGPE that the initial call came through a Spanish translator and reported that a person had fallen into the tank. After the rescue, firefighters hosed the man down before he left the scene.

Vault toilets are common in campgrounds and remote recreation areas. Officials did not report any structural failure at the facility, and no additional injuries were reported.
