Chicago, Illinois – At least 12 people were shot late Friday after an SUV pulled up to a crowd on Chicago’s South Side and two people inside opened fire, police said.
The victims included eight men and four women between the ages of 17 and 47. Two people were listed in critical condition, while others were treated at four hospitals. Police said another man suffered unknown injuries but refused medical treatment.
Officers initially responded to a report of one person shot, then found multiple victims, including a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four graze wounds. Both were listed in fair condition.
The SUV left the scene, and detectives are investigating. Police had not immediately released information about suspects or a motive.
The shooting happened during Juneteenth weekend, when events across the country marked the end of slavery in the United States. Earlier Friday, former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama welcomed visitors to the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side.
Chicago police reported at least 22 people shot citywide since Friday evening, including four fatally.
