PALM BEACH, Fla. — A 21-year-old man was fatally shot by law enforcement early Sunday after breaching the secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, according to federal and local officials.

Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said the man unlawfully entered the property around 1:30 a.m. carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric L. Bradshaw said at a news conference that the suspect, identified by the FBI as Austin Tucker Martin of Moore County, N.C., dropped the gas can but raised the shotgun into a firing position after being ordered to comply. At that point, two Secret Service agents and one sheriff’s deputy opened fire.

Authorities are investigating whether a Secret Service agent or the deputy fired the fatal shot. The FBI is leading the probe, with assistance from the Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Agents involved have been placed on routine administrative leave.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Secret Service acted “quickly and decisively” to neutralize an armed individual. Trump was in Washington, D.C., at the time of the incident.

Officials urged nearby residents to review security camera footage and contact investigators with any relevant information.
