WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona warned that there will be “consequences” if the military pursues disciplinary action against fellow Arizona Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly, following the Pentagon’s announcement of an investigation into a video in which Kelly and other lawmakers urged service members to “refuse illegal orders.” The video drew condemnation from President Donald Trump, who accused the group of “sedition” on Truth Social.
In an interview with CNN’s “The Arena,” Gallego criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for authorizing the review. He said military leaders participating in what he called a “weaponization of government” would face accountability once Trump leaves office. Gallego, a Marine combat veteran, addressed Hegseth directly, calling him “a coward” and saying he looked forward to the day he no longer leads the Defense Department.
The Pentagon said Kelly falls under its jurisdiction because he used his rank and service affiliation in the video, “lending the appearance of authority.” Hegseth said Kelly’s conduct “brings discredit upon the armed forces.” Kelly, a retired Navy captain, responded that he and other Democrats “will not be intimidated from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable.”
Gallego also urged service members to continue performing their duties while politicians handle the dispute. A day earlier, he sharply criticized the Defense Department’s statement online, while Kelly said he had “given too much to this country to be silenced by bullies.”
