Eloy, Arizona. Lawmakers and family members are calling for the release of a woman held at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Eloy, citing severe health concerns and alleged mistreatment while in custody. Arabella Rodriguez Marquez, known as Yari, has been detained for nearly 10 months, during which her family says she has lost roughly 70 pounds and is suffering from lymphocytic leukemia without adequate medical care.
Yari’s partner, Sonia Almaraz, said the two were detained earlier this year while returning from Mexico, after which Yari was taken into ICE custody. Almaraz described a rapid physical decline and accused ICE of denying necessary treatment, calling the situation life-threatening. Family members and advocates argue that Yari should be released or placed under alternatives to detention, such as electronic monitoring, so she can receive hospital care.
ICE strongly disputes the claims. An agency spokesperson said Yari has received extensive medical attention, including multiple visits with an oncologist, and stated that she did not disclose any preexisting medical conditions. ICE also said Yari was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle another individual using fraudulent identification, an accusation her family denies.
Members of Arizona’s congressional delegation, including Reps. Yassamin Ansari and Sens. Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, have pressed ICE for oversight access, citing broader concerns about deaths and medical neglect in detention facilities. Deaths in ICE custody have reached their highest levels in decades, intensifying scrutiny of detention conditions nationwide.
