Phoenix, AZ — Democratic congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia says she was attacked and raped in August while attempting to repair a damaged campaign sign in the Phoenix area.
Greene-Placentia told the Phoenix New Times that she was crossing a parking lot shortly after 2 a.m. on Aug. 14 when someone struck her in the head, causing her to lose consciousness. She said she later awoke to find a man sexually assaulting her while another man stood nearby.
Greene-Placentia said she suffered bruising and believes she may also have sustained a concussion. She initially did not report the assault, describing feelings of embarrassment and difficulty recalling portions of what happened.
She later told her husband and campaign staff and reported the incident to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office about two weeks afterward. A sheriff’s spokesperson told reporters the investigation remains active and declined to provide additional details.
Greene-Placentia said she ultimately decided to discuss the alleged assault publicly because she wanted other survivors to feel able to speak about their experiences.
Her campaign emphasized that the disclosure was intended to support survivors rather than advance a political message. Greene-Placentia is challenging Republican Rep. Abraham Hamadeh for a congressional seat representing portions of the Phoenix area.
