The office of Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy rejected claims Tuesday that the state is planning to build an isolated Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility akin to Florida’s newly opened “Alligator Alcatraz.”
A now-corrected Newsweek story inaccurately reported that Alaska had floated such a plan following a July 1 Fox News segment. In the segment, host Laura Ingraham joked with Trump adviser Stephen Miller—who urged red states to construct ICE detention centers—saying, “Alaska told us we don’t have alligators, but we have lots of bears.”
Dunleavy spokesperson Jeff Turner clarified, “The story is false,” and added the governor’s office responded to Fox saying there were “no such plans.”
The rumor arose amid the backdrop of Donald Trump‘s new $165 billion domestic security bill, which dramatically expands ICE funding, including $45 billion for new detention centers.
Despite the funding push and Miller’s calls, Dunleavy’s office confirmed it has no intentions of building any “Bear Alcatraz” facility.
