MONTGOMERY, AL — A man from Needham, Alabama, has been federally charged after allegedly making violent threats to rabbis, an imam, and other faith leaders across several Southern states, according to The Associated Press.
Prosecutors say Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker faces charges of making interstate communication threats after calling and texting multiple religious figures in Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and North Carolina. In one message to a rabbi, Shoemaker allegedly said, “I want you to die,” and claimed to be urging “Muslimeens to kill you rabbis.”
Authorities executed a search warrant at Shoemaker’s home and discovered firearms, ammunition, and papers listing the names and contact information of religious leaders and other prominent individuals. The FBI affidavit also noted Shoemaker’s diagnosed mental illness and said family members told investigators he had stopped taking prescribed medication.
Shoemaker was previously arrested on state charges, including resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm, and is currently being held in the Choctaw County Jail.
The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office said the arrest followed a joint federal and local law enforcement operation responding to “credible threats of violence” targeting synagogues in Alabama and neighboring states.
Needham, located near the Mississippi border, has fewer than 100 residents. Authorities have not said whether additional suspects or targets are being investigated.
