Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Sunday that he fully supports President Donald Trump’s plan to deploy 400 members of the Texas National Guard to other states to “ensure safety for federal officials.” The move follows protests at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in Illinois and Oregon that led to multiple arrests.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called the deployment “Trump’s invasion” and urged Abbott to refuse coordination. Abbott replied on X that he “fully authorize[s]” the president’s order, adding, “You can either fully enforce protection for federal employees or get out of the way and let Texas Guard do it.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed in a memo that the orders take effect immediately for an initial 60-day period and could extend to cities like Portland and Chicago. However, a federal judge temporarily blocked deployments to Oregon.

Abbott has previously used the Texas Guard for immigration enforcement, protest response, and border operations under Operation Lone Star.
