In a decisive 396-23 vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on Thursday denouncing the backing of terrorist entities such as Hamas and Hezbollah in higher education institutions. This move comes as a direct response to the recent tumult on college campuses following Hamas’s attack on Israel last month. The resolution specifically targets the support for these groups on campuses, highlighting the potential creation of a hostile environment for Jewish students, faculty, and staff.
The resolution also urges campus administrators to condemn antisemitism openly and to ensure that Jewish members of the academic community can freely exercise their speech rights without intimidation. It further calls for the enforcement of federal civil rights laws designed to protect Jewish students.
Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah), the sponsor of the resolution, emphasized the House’s firm stance against evil and its unwavering support for Israel. The resolution also cited incidents across various campuses, including The George Washington University and Cornell University, where support for Hamas was expressed.
Rep. Kathy Manning (D-N.C.) condemned the rise in antisemitism on college campuses, asserting that such hatred undermines American values and the rights of students to an equal education. The resolution is part of a series of legislative actions taken by the House in the aftermath of the Middle East conflict, under the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). This includes a substantial $14.3 billion aid package for Israel.
