During a press conference on Tuesday, Kevin McCarthy, the former Speaker of the House, criticized the Republicans who voted to remove him from his position. He stated that these individuals cannot be considered true conservatives because they opposed important measures such as the largest budget cuts in Congress’s history, work requirements, and border security. McCarthy asserted that he does not belong to a party that is angry and chaotic. He also expressed that his Republican opponents do not have the right to claim the title of conservative.
McCarthy was removed from his position by a vote of 216-210, with eight members of his own party, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), joining House Democrats. McCarthy expressed disappointment in some of the members he helped get elected and wished he had chosen others instead. Despite the challenge to his Speakership, McCarthy remained defiant and posted a strong message on social media during Gaetz’s motion to remove him from his role.
