The United Nations and other agencies has revealed a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over half a million people facing starvation. This situation has arisen following Israel’s military response to an attack by Hamas on October 7. The report, released on Thursday, indicates that the limited food supply into the region has been “woefully insufficient,” causing widespread hunger that surpasses recent crises in Afghanistan and Yemen.

Arif Husain, the chief economist for the U.N.’s World Food Program, expressed that the scale and speed of this crisis are unprecedented. The conflict, which has been ongoing for over 10 weeks, has resulted in nearly 20,000 Palestinian deaths. Israel’s military operations continue, focusing on eradicating Hamas militants, particularly in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, the conflict has displaced over 1.9 million residents, with many seeking shelter in U.N. facilities.

The health sector in Gaza is also collapsing, with only nine out of 36 health facilities partially functioning. The World Health Organization described dire conditions in hospitals, with inadequate supplies and staff to manage the crisis. The ongoing bombardment and fighting, coupled with severed internet and communication lines, have made it difficult to obtain detailed information on recent developments in the conflict.
