Israeli warplanes targeted two refugee camps in Gaza, intensifying the conflict as the Biden administration approved a new emergency weapons sale to Israel. This action comes amidst international calls for a cease-fire due to escalating civilian casualties, hunger, and displacement in Gaza.

Israel remains committed to its air and ground offensive, aiming to dismantle Hamas, despite the group’s deep integration into Palestinian society. The U.S. continues to support Israel diplomatically and with military supplies, asserting that an immediate end to the war would signify a victory for Hamas. Concurrently, the U.S. urges Israel to minimize civilian harm.

The conflict, triggered by a deadly Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, has led to significant displacement, with approximately 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents seeking shelter. Many perceive no area in Gaza as safe, as even designated safe zones have been targeted.

The recent Israeli airstrikes in the Nuseirat and Bureij camps have resulted in civilian casualties, including the killing of a journalist and his family. As Israeli forces advance, tens of thousands flee to Rafah, creating makeshift camps under dire conditions.

The U.S. State Department, citing Israel’s defensive needs, approved a $147.5 million sale for equipment essential for previously purchased Israeli munitions. This bypasses the usual congressional review.

Conditions in Gaza are deteriorating, with aid delivery hampered and a growing dependence on humanitarian aid. The United Nations warns of inadequate food, medicine, and fuel supplies, alongside increasing disease outbreaks.

The conflict has resulted in over 21,500 Palestinian deaths, predominantly civilians, and the death of 168 Israeli soldiers. Israel attributes civilian deaths to Hamas’ tactics of embedding within civilian areas, while efforts continue to recover hostages taken during the October attack.
