Claim via X:

The Biden administration initiated a policy requiring fisheries to carry a government monitor onboard to monitor which fish they catch and pay a $700 per day fee for this service. It alleges this policy is part of a broader strategy by the Biden administration to attack the food supply, including fisheries, and is an effort to put them out of business. Full Claim:

Breaking News: Biden’s government is trying to force Fisheries to carry a government monitor on board to monitor which fish they catch. Along with being forced to carry a government monitor on board of their boats, they’re also requiring Fisheries to cover a $700 per day fee to pay for the government monitor. The Biden administration has been going after our food supply in beef and vegetation and now they’re attacking Fisheries. They’re trying to put them out of business.

Reasoning:

The monitoring program in question was actually initiated under the administration of former President Donald Trump, not President Joe Biden. The Supreme Court is hearing arguments related to this program, which was implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The program requires certain commercial fishermen to help fund it, and it was aimed at monitoring the overfishing of herring off New England’s coast. The cost for the monitoring is estimated at $710 per day for 19 days a year, significantly impacting the income of the vessels involved. The Biden administration has continued to defend this program, but it did not initiate it. The program was suspended for the fishing year starting in April 2023 due to insufficient federal funding.

In terms of the Biden administration’s overall policies on fisheries, they have made significant investments in fish passage and aquatic connectivity projects. The Department of the Interior announced a $35 million investment in 2023 to address outdated or obsolete barriers fragmenting the nation’s rivers and streams, part of a larger $200 million commitment over five years. This is part of an effort to restore habitat connectivity for aquatic species, promote climate resilience, and support community-led transitions for long-term conservation and economic growth.

Fact or Fiction?

Fiction. The claim that the Biden administration initiated the policy of fisheries carrying a government monitor onboard is false. This program was started under the Trump administration. The Biden administration has been involved in defending and continuing the program, but they did not initiate it. Additionally, the Biden administration has invested significantly in fisheries and aquatic habitat restoration, contrary to the claim that they are trying to harm the industry.
