Ten Republicans who falsely claimed to be electors for Donald Trump in Wisconsin have settled a civil lawsuit, admitting their actions were an attempt to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. The settlement, announced by attorneys from Law Forward and Georgetown University Law Center, includes an acknowledgment from the fake electors that Biden won Wisconsin. They have withdrawn their filings and agreed not to serve as electors in future elections where Trump is a candidate.
The group also agreed to issue a statement to government offices, admitting their actions were part of an effort to improperly overturn the election results. This marks the first instance of Trump electors revoking their filings sent to Congress.
The settlement, which involves no damages or admission of wrongdoing, was reached with the assistance of the Madison-based Stafford Rosenbaum law firm. Attorney Jeff Mandell, representing Democratic voters, stated, “The defendants’ actions violated bedrock principles. We brought this case to ensure that they are held accountable.”
Andrew Hitt, one of the fake electors, claimed they were misled into participating in the scheme. The fake electors have also agreed to assist the Department of Justice and Democrats in ongoing investigations and lawsuits related to the 2020 election.
