Donald Trump, addressing questions of authoritarianism, quipped on Tuesday that he would be a dictator only on “day one,” followed by plans to close the border and commence drilling. Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity in Davenport, Iowa, Trump stated, “After that, I’m not a dictator, OK?” He avoided discussing his vows of “retribution” against political adversaries, including probes into President Joe Biden.
Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, warned, “Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he’s reelected… he said he will be a dictator on day one.” Trump, the GOP frontrunner for 2024, has labeled some opponents as “vermin,” echoing terminology of past dictators like Hitler and Mussolini.
Biden, during a fundraiser, emphasized the necessity to defeat Trump, citing the threat to democracy. Mark Esper, former Trump defense secretary, and ex-U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney expressed concerns about Trump’s potential retribution policies and the risk of a dictatorship in the U.S.
In his Fox News appearance, Trump criticized Biden and claimed his supporters influenced the four criminal trials against him. The event, styled as a “town hall,” did not feature audience questions. Trump faces indictments related to the 2020 election, hush money payments, and mishandling classified documents. He visited Iowa ahead of a GOP debate in Alabama, which he skipped despite leading in polls.
