The Colorado Republican Party has escalated their legal challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling that disqualified former President Donald Trump from appearing on Colorado’s 2024 primary ballot. This move by the state GOP follows the December 19 decision by Colorado’s highest court, which concluded that Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol made him ineligible to be on the ballot.

The basis for the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision lies in its interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, particularly in relation to Trump’s role in instigating the Capitol attack. This ruling marks an unprecedented application of constitutional law in disqualifying a presidential candidate.

Reacting to this decision, the Colorado Republican Party filed an appeal on December 27, advocating for Trump’s inclusion in the March primary ballot. This appeal represents a major step in the ongoing legal and political battles surrounding Trump’s eligibility for future political office, particularly as he remains a frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2024.
