Disney is battling Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in a federal lawsuit over free speech violations and control of Walt Disney World’s governing district. The lawsuit was filed in response to DeSantis’ takeover of the district as retaliation for Disney opposing Florida’s law that bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades.
In a hearing in Tallahassee, DeSantis’ attorneys argued for dismissal, claiming immunity for the governor, who they say doesn’t enforce laws related to the district’s governance. Disney alleges that DeSantis used state powers to punish the company in violation of the First Amendment.
U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor, appointed by President Donald Trump, is presiding over the case. The outcome will determine control over municipal services in Disney World’s area. The conflict intensified after Disney opposed the state’s “don’t say gay” law, leading to a legislative move by DeSantis and GOP legislators. They passed a law transferring control from Disney to the governor’s appointees.
Disney accuses DeSantis and his appointees of using political power to suppress opposing viewpoints, labeling this un-American. Since the takeover, the district has reportedly faced employee exits due to perceived politicization and cronyism. DeSantis, a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate, argues that Disney lacks standing in the lawsuit.
