Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary, expressed critical views about former President Trump’s manipulation of information. Speaking to CNN’s Jim Acosta, she disagreed with the notion of Trump being a mere conspiracy theorist. Grisham clarified, “He’s not a crackpot. He’s actually a very smart man… But no, he knows he’s lying.” She recounted her experience as press secretary, where Trump instructed her to repeat false information, knowing his supporters would believe it.
“He used to tell me, ‘Go out there and say this.’ And if it was false, he would say, ‘It doesn’t matter, Stephanie. Just say it over and over and over again, people will believe it,'” Grisham shared, highlighting Trump’s awareness and exploitation of his base’s trust.
Grisham, who served as press secretary from July 2019 to April 2020 and later as chief of staff for Melania Trump, resigned on January 6, 2021, following the Capitol riot. Since leaving the White House, she has been vocal about her experiences in the Trump administration. Grisham also opined that Trump’s reliance on falsehoods might hinder his performance in the general election, particularly with independents and moderate Republicans.
Reflecting on the difficulty of accepting Trump’s true nature, Grisham said, “It was really hard for me to come to terms with who he was, because I really believed in him, his policies, and the person I thought he was.”
