In Tucson, Arizona, KJZZ journalist Alisa Reznick was arrested while reporting on a pro-Palestine demonstration at the University of Arizona Tech Park, near a Raytheon facility. The incident occurred as Reznick was leaving the protest site to return to her vehicle. Despite identifying herself as a press member and visibly carrying press credentials and a camera, she was apprehended by a Pima County sheriff’s deputy. The arrest, captured on video, led to her being charged with criminal trespassing, a charge also levied against 25 protesters, as reported by the Tucson Sentinel.
Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that the arrests followed multiple requests for the protesters to vacate the Raytheon site. He emphasized the department’s lack of specific press policies, advocating for equal respect for all citizens. Pima County Sheriff’s Department guidelines, however, mandate that journalists should have “reasonable access” to scenes without undue restrictions.
The ACLU of Arizona criticized the arrest, highlighting it as a violation of constitutional rights. Requests for comments were made to both KJZZ and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department by The Hill.
