A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates tepid excitement among Americans for a potential 2020 election rematch between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump. While more Republicans prefer Trump as their nominee, Democrats show less enthusiasm for Biden. The poll reflects a general dissatisfaction, with 56% of U.S. adults expressing displeasure with Biden as the Democratic nominee and 58% with Trump for the GOP. Notably, 28% are dissatisfied with both potential candidates.

Randy Johnson, a Republican, voiced his disappointment: “I find it sad for our country that that’s our best choices.” Similarly, Andrew Collins, an independent, called it “the most uniquely horrible choice I’ve had in my life.”

Around half of Democrats are satisfied with Biden as their nominee, but one-third are dissatisfied. Republican satisfaction with Trump is higher, with two-thirds content if he becomes the nominee. Deborah Brophy, an independent, criticized Biden’s focus on international conflicts over domestic issues like homelessness and gun violence, questioning his fitness for another term.

The poll also reveals a priority among both parties for electability over representation of personal or party views. Joe Hill, a Republican, expressed his willingness to support any Republican candidate over Biden, despite concerns about Trump’s polarizing nature.

In terms of favorability, about three-quarters of Democrats view Biden positively, while 7 in 10 Republicans feel similarly about Trump. However, neither candidate is favored by a majority of the general U.S. public.
