The White House on Thursday dismissed as “fake news” an Associated Press report suggesting that Kilmar Abrego Garcia could be deported to a third country instead of El Salvador.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson posted on X, “Abrego Garcia was returned to the United States to face trial for the egregious charges against him… He will face the full force of the American justice system.”
However, in court Thursday, DOJ attorney Jonathan Guynn said ICE intends to initiate removal proceedings, likely to a third country. U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis responded, “To El Salvador or a third country?” Guynn replied, “To a third country is my understanding.”
Abrego Garcia, wrongfully deported earlier this year, was returned to the U.S. under court order. He has pleaded not guilty to human smuggling charges.
DHS said ICE won’t confirm future removals due to “operational security,” while DOJ said Abrego Garcia “will not walk free in our country again.”
His lawyers fear he could be quietly removed over the weekend. A July 7 hearing is scheduled in Maryland.
