Donald Trump said Friday he’s open to allowing reputable farmers to continue employing undocumented workers if they take “responsibility” for them, signaling a possible exemption from his administration’s renewed immigration crackdown. “We can’t put the farms out of business,” he told reporters.

The remark follows a week of shifting policies. The Department of Homeland Security initially paused ICE raids on farms and hospitality venues, then resumed them days later. Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, confirmed enforcement is back on.

The ambiguity has left many workers fearful, with absenteeism reported across job sites. Businesses and even Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have urged the administration to spare key sectors from disruption.

Meanwhile, Trump advisor Stephen Miller is reportedly pressuring DHS to ramp up arrests to 3,000 per day. Trump emphasized that deportation efforts should prioritize those with criminal records, while reiterating his support for farmers: “They keep us happy and healthy and fat.”
