Donald Trump said Tuesday he will not call Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to offer condolences after the targeted shootings of two state lawmakers, calling it a “waste of time.” Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said Walz is “whacked out” and “a mess,” adding, “I’m not calling him.”
One lawmaker, former Speaker Melissa Hortman, and her husband were killed in the attack. Another state senator and his wife were wounded. Presidents typically reach out to state leaders following such tragedies.
Trump, returning from an early exit at the G7 summit in Canada due to tensions between Israel and Iran, dismissed any outreach, saying, “I could be nice and call him, but why waste time?”
Walz, who ran as Kamala Harris’s vice presidential nominee in 2024, frequently criticized Trump during the campaign, calling Republican leaders “just weird.” Their ongoing political feud underscores the partisan divide in the wake of the deadly shootings.
