WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Thursday he will decide within the next 10 days whether to pursue further diplomacy with Iran or order a military strike.
Speaking during a Board of Peace meeting in Washington, Trump said, “Now we may have to take it a step further or we may not. Maybe we are going to make a deal [with Iran]. You are going to be finding out over the next probably 10 days.”
U.S. and Israeli officials have indicated that any military operation would likely involve a large-scale, weeks-long campaign and could begin within days if ordered. Trump met with senior advisers Wednesday to review the status of nuclear talks held earlier this week in Geneva.
According to U.S. officials, Iran is expected to respond by the end of the month with a proposal addressing American concerns over its nuclear program. Trump said the talks “went well” but warned that Iran must agree to a “meaningful deal” or face consequences.
Officials also noted that the upcoming deployment of the USS Ford carrier strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean may factor into the administration’s timeline.
