Brad Lander, New York City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate, was arrested Tuesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while accompanying an immigrant at a Manhattan immigration court. Lander was reportedly detained after demanding agents show a judicial warrant while attempting to prevent the individual’s removal.
“Show me your warrant. Show me your badge,” Lander shouted, according to video footage. The confrontation escalated when agents forcibly separated him from the immigrant, restrained him against a wall, and removed him from the building. “You don’t have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens,” Lander told agents.
His campaign spokeswoman said they are monitoring the situation. The incident occurred at 26 Federal Plaza, a known immigration court location. Reporters present say ICE declined to answer where Lander was taken.
The arrest comes just one week before New York City’s mayoral primary election and echoes last week’s detainment of Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA), who was removed from a DHS press conference after confronting Secretary Kristi Noem.
