Organizers of the “No Kings” protests are planning another large-scale demonstration on July 17, honoring the late civil rights leader John Lewis, following what they call one of the largest mass protests in U.S. history. The June 14 rallies were held in response to Donald Trump‘s military parade in Washington, D.C., which critics view as authoritarian.
The Transformative Justice Coalition said the July 17 protest will focus on racial justice, voting rights, and strengthening democracy. Barbara Arnwine emphasized the event’s mission to combat voter suppression and demand an inclusive, just society.
According to Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin, over 2,100 events took place globally across 20 countries with an estimated 5 million participants. In Minnesota, organizers continued with their rally despite the tragic shooting that killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and wounded Sen. John Hoffman.
The Salt Lake City protest turned deadly when a demonstrator, Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, was fatally shot. A GoFundMe was launched to support his family.
