Maykol Bogoya-Duarte, the Detroit teen whose ICE detention sparked public outrage, has been deported to Colombia, his attorney confirmed Friday. Maykol, 18, had been 3.5 credits shy of graduating from Western International High School when he was arrested May 20 during a field trip traffic stop.
Attorney Ruby Robinson said Maykol’s mother informed him late Thursday night that the teen was now with his grandmother in Colombia. ICE has not officially confirmed the deportation.
Maykol came to the U.S. at 16 and had been working with immigration officials and the Colombian consulate to return voluntarily, planning to complete high school before departing. A final deportation order had already been issued in 2024.
His teachers and classmates pleaded for his release, and thousands signed a petition urging the Detroit school board and lawmakers to intervene. “The cruelty of this country really shakes me,” said teacher Kristen Schoettle.
Maykol’s arrest followed a traffic stop where officers, unable to communicate in Spanish, called Border Patrol. He had only a city ID, not a license.
