President Donald Trump privately fumed after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard posted a viral video warning of “nuclear annihilation” as Trump mulled U.S. military involvement in Israel’s campaign against Iran. “Political elite and warmongers… are carelessly fomenting fear,” Gabbard said in her 5:30 a.m. message.
The post, which Trump viewed as off-message and undermining, reportedly led him to confront Gabbard directly. “He doesn’t like it when people are off message… and many took that video as trying to correct the administration’s position,” a senior official said.
Despite rumors of growing distance, Gabbard insisted Tuesday that she and Trump are “on the same page.” She added, “President Trump was saying the same thing I said in my annual threat assessment back in March.”
Trump, however, downplayed her congressional remarks that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapon: “I don’t care what she said. I think they were very close to having a weapon.”
Vice President J.D. Vance defended Gabbard as a “critical part” of Trump’s coalition, while others question whether she’s being sidelined. A visit to Hiroshima—approved by the NSC—also stirred confusion.
Though still attending White House briefings, Gabbard’s future in the administration remains uncertain. Asked in May whether she’d run for president, Gabbard replied, “I will never rule out any opportunity to serve my country.”
