Democrats in the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform—the main investigative arm of the U.S. House—have asked the company behind Arizona’s presidential election recount to turn over a trove of documents as part of an investigation into the bizarre audit, which has gone on for months now.
Top Democrats on the committee sent a letter to Douglas Logan, the CEO of Cyber Ninjas, asking him to provide documents by July 28 on matters like whether the company has had any communication with former President Donald Trump and details on how conspiracy theories might have played into the audit procedures.
Cyber Ninjas—a Florida-based cybersecurity company with no election experience—has been tasked with conducting a hand recount of some 2.1 million ballots in Maricopa County, as part of an audit ordered by the Republican-controlled Arizona state Senate.
Ballots have been checked for bamboo fibers in response to an absurd conspiracy theory that forgeries were somehow shipped to Arizona from Asia.
Early in the audit, counters were also spotted using blue pens to mark ballots, which shouldn’t be done because blue ink can alter how ballots are read by machines—a problem that was referenced in the letter.
The audit is scheduled to end this week, according to the Arizona Republic, though deadlines in the past have been consistently missed. Arizona Senate President Karen Fann (R) said Tuesday the results of the audit will not match the long-certified official election results.
