New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is challenging President Donald Trump to a televised debate, bypassing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whom he accuses of being Trump’s “puppet.”
“Why should I debate Donald Trump’s puppet when I could debate Donald Trump himself?” Mamdani told the New York Post. The democratic socialist nominee cited a New York Times report alleging a phone call between Trump and Cuomo—though both deny it occurred. Trump reportedly favors Cuomo and is working to remove Republican Curtis Sliwa and Democratic incumbent Eric Adams from the race.
“If Donald Trump is serious about intervening… he should come to New York City and debate me directly,” Mamdani said, referencing Trump’s food benefit cuts and tax breaks for the wealthy.
Cuomo, meanwhile, is demanding five debates with Mamdani—one in each borough—claiming voters deserve answers. Mamdani has declined, saying he’ll only participate in the two official Campaign Finance Board debates in October. “I won’t be at this televised circus,” he said.
