Washington, DC — The Trump administration is giving pro-Trump YouTuber Nick Shirley a $10,000 government payment for his fraud-related videos, further blurring the line between independent journalism and political advocacy.
Shirley will become the first recipient of a new Justice Department Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program, which promises rewards of up to $30,000 for tips producing convictions or significant enforcement actions.
The White House credits Shirley’s viral Minnesota daycare video with helping expose fraud. But major fraud investigations in Minnesota were already underway before his video, including the $250 million Feeding Our Future case.
Shirley’s reporting methods have also repeatedly drawn scrutiny. His videos rely heavily on confrontational encounters, selective footage and dramatic editing, while presenting suspicions as evidence of broader wrongdoing. Minnesota inspectors later found the daycare centers highlighted in his viral video generally operating normally, undermining the sweeping impression that they were simply fake businesses collecting government money.
Shirley also has a documented record of spreading inaccurate claims. AFP previously debunked his assertion that more than 30 people were illegally registered to vote at a San Diego UPS store. The address actually included a 34-unit apartment complex, and election officials found nobody registered to the store itself.
The payment comes after the Trump White House repeatedly promoted Shirley, invited him to administration events and used his videos to support its political messaging and policy actions.
That relationship raises an obvious question about how meaningfully Shirley can continue presenting himself as an independent journalist while receiving money and extraordinary access from the administration he overwhelmingly supports.
