White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to name the administrator of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during Tuesday’s press briefing, despite ongoing speculation that Elon Musk is leading the department’s efforts to reduce government spending.

While Musk has played a key role in the Trump administration’s initiative to shrink the federal workforce and cut wasteful spending, officials have maintained in court filings that he is not DOGE’s administrator.

Leavitt confirmed that Musk has been tasked with overseeing DOGE’s mission but stated that career officials and political appointees are handling its daily operations. When pressed, she refused to disclose who officially leads the department.

During a separate court hearing on DOGE’s access to Treasury Department facilities, a Justice Department attorney also admitted uncertainty about the department’s leadership. Leavitt later told reporters she would not reveal the administrator’s name from the podium but insisted the administration has been transparent about DOGE’s operations.
