The entire East Wing of the White House has been demolished as President Donald Trump proceeds with plans to build a massive new ballroom on the property, according to photos published Thursday by the Associated Press.
The East Wing—long home to first ladies’ offices and used for planning state dinners and public events—has been reduced to rubble as part of Trump’s $300 million ballroom project. The new structure, nearly twice the size of the White House itself, marks one of the most significant architectural changes to the presidential residence in modern history.
Trump defended the decision Wednesday, saying the existing East Wing “would have hurt a very, very expensive, beautiful building.” He added that the new ballroom is being “paid for 100% by me and some friends of mine,” with no taxpayer funding.
The demolition began despite the absence of formal approval from federal oversight agencies that regulate construction on government property. Historic preservation groups have warned the administration that it must undergo public review before proceeding with such extensive alterations.
