Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) criticized President-elect Trump’s choice of Tulsi Gabbard for national intelligence director, claiming on MSNBC that Gabbard is “likely a Russian asset.” The former Hawaii congresswoman and Democrat has faced allegations of promoting pro-Russia narratives and opposing U.S. intelligence conclusions, particularly regarding Russia and Ukraine.
Gabbard previously suggested U.S. involvement in developing biological weapons in Ukraine, prompting Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) to accuse her of spreading “treasonous lies” and “Russian propaganda.” She also criticized the Biden administration for failing to address Russia’s concerns over NATO expansion, which she claimed could have prevented the war in Ukraine.
The pick has drawn controversy, with critics recalling Gabbard’s 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accused of using chemical weapons. Gabbard defended her stance during her 2020 presidential campaign, declining to label Assad a war criminal.
In 2019, Hillary Clinton described Gabbard as a “favorite of the Russians,” citing media support for her campaign.
