Vice President Kamala Harris deviated from her prepared remarks at a rally in New Hampshire to address the issue of gun violence following a fatal shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Calling the incident a “senseless tragedy,” Harris stressed the need to end the gun violence epidemic in the U.S.

Recalling her meetings with Generation Z students on college campuses, Harris noted that every student she spoke with had undergone active shooter training. She compared this to her own experience with earthquake and fire drills as a student, emphasizing that students today shouldn’t have to fear for their safety in classrooms.

Harris returned to her script after commenting, “This is one of the many issues that’s at stake in this election.”

The shooting at Apalachee High School resulted in four deaths, with the suspect in custody. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp directed all state resources to respond. President Biden also issued a statement mourning the victims and urging bipartisan action to address gun violence.
