A recent poll reveals that 20% of voters blame President Joe Biden for the Supreme Court’s repeal of Roe v. Wade in 2022, despite former President Donald Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices who were instrumental in the decision. The poll, conducted by The New York Times, Siena College, and The Philadelphia Inquirer, found that 17% of voters in six swing states attribute “some” or “a lot of” responsibility to Biden for the end of abortion rights, while over 55% assign similar responsibility to Trump.
Abortion has become a potent campaign issue for Democrats and a vulnerability for Republicans since the repeal of Roe and the subsequent enactment of abortion bans in nearly 20 states. Mini Timmaraju, president of Reproductive Freedom for All, argues that the compelling evidence, especially Trump’s own words, needs to reach more people.
Interestingly, 37% of respondents believe abortion should always be legal, and 49% think Biden would handle abortion better than Trump. A Navigator survey found growing public awareness of Trump’s anti-abortion stance, with voters increasingly believing he would sign a national abortion ban if elected.
Christina Reynolds of EMILY’s List isn’t overly concerned about the 17% blaming Biden, suggesting that this group may blame Biden for anything or simply associate the repeal with his presidency. This 17% largely comprises young voters who didn’t vote in the last election, a demographic Timmaraju sees as an opportunity for the Biden campaign.
Geoff Garin, a Democratic pollster, notes that many voters are not yet focused on the election, a sentiment reflected in the poll. The poll also shows Trump leading in five of the six battleground states surveyed, with decreased support for Biden among young voters and voters of color due to dissatisfaction with his handling of the economy and the Israel-Hamas war. Despite these challenges, Reynolds is confident that by election day, voters will be clear about who’s to blame for the abortion rights crisis.
