U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Jon Luke Evans, a Jamaican national, in Biddeford, Maine, for immigration violations after he allegedly attempted to purchase a firearm while serving as a police officer. Evans lawfully entered the U.S. in 2023 but overstayed his visa, triggering a federal alert during the firearm background check.
ICE Boston Field Office director Patricia H. Hyde criticized the Old Orchard Beach Police Department for employing Evans and issuing him a firearm. “The fact that a police department would hire an illegal alien… would be comical if it weren’t so tragic,” Hyde said.
Police Chief Elise Chard responded that the department relied on DHS’s E-Verify system, which confirmed Evans’ work authorization at the time of hire. His Employment Authorization Document showed validity through 2030.
The department said it was never informed of Evans’ detention and learned about the arrest via ICE’s press release. ICE claims Evans admitted to attempting to buy the firearm for police duties.
This follows a similar incident in April where ICE arrested another immigrant, Gratien Milandou Wamba, a Congolese national employed as a correction officer.
