Brad Spafford, 36, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of possessing unregistered destructive devices and a short-barrel rifle. The FBI accuses Spafford of stockpiling over 150 pipe bombs, which agents mostly detonated on his property. Prosecutors also allege Spafford used a photo of President Joe Biden for target practice and spoke approvingly of political assassinations.
Spafford’s attorneys argue the devices may not qualify as explosives under the National Firearms Act, noting FBI agents needed their own materials to detonate them. They further contend Spafford posed no threat and that accusations of political danger are unfounded. Some materials were reportedly stored in a refrigerator alongside food items.
