Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio harshly criticized Germany’s decision to label the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as an extremist group, calling it a threat to democratic principles. The designation by Germany’s domestic spy agency allows increased surveillance of AfD, which recently finished second in national elections.

Rubio called the move “tyranny in disguise” and accused Germany’s establishment of using state power to suppress opposition, especially over immigration. Vance, who met with AfD leader Alice Weidel earlier this year, said Germany’s ruling class is trying to “destroy” the country’s most representative party in East Germany.

Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution issued a 1,000-page report concluding that AfD undermines democratic values and human dignity with its anti-migrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric. The foreign ministry defended the classification, emphasizing that it followed an independent investigation and that courts would make the final ruling.

Germany noted that history shows the danger of unchecked right-wing extremism.
