Vice President J.D. Vance said Sunday that Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits contribute to “waste and fraud,” urging reforms to ensure the funds reach eligible Americans. The comments come as the government shutdown nears its third week, with Senate Democrats withholding votes on stopgap funding to push for healthcare measures, while Republicans back a short-term plan through November.

More than 24 million Americans rely on ACA marketplace coverage, and Democrats are pressing to extend enhanced tax credits set to expire at year’s end. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned that failure to renew them would sharply raise healthcare costs for millions.

Vance argued that scaling back what he called “ridiculous regulation” under Obamacare could improve access to affordable care. President Donald Trump said he would only discuss healthcare reforms once the shutdown concludes.
