The Justice Department has reached an agreement with the Louisville Metro Police Department, bringing oversight to the department after an investigation found “unlawful and unconstitutional” practices. The investigation was launched after the death of Breonna Taylor in 2020, which sparked nationwide protests for racial justice and police reform.

The agreement will require the department to implement sweeping changes to its policies and training procedures, as well as to create a community advisory board to oversee the department’s practices. The department will also be required to collect and report data on the use of force by its officers and to provide regular reports to the Justice Department on its progress.

The investigation found that the department had engaged in a pattern of illegal and unconstitutional practices, including the use of excessive force, racial profiling, and unconstitutional searches and seizures. The investigation also found that the department had failed to adequately investigate allegations of misconduct by its officers.

The agreement is a step forward in the pursuit of justice for Breonna Taylor and for systemic reform of policing in the United States. It is a reminder that the fight for racial justice and police accountability is ongoing, and that there is much work left to be done.
