Ukraine launched a daring long-range drone assault Sunday, dubbed “Operation Spiderweb,” striking four Russian air bases—including one in Siberia, 2,500 miles from Ukraine’s border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack damaged 40 Russian warplanes, roughly a third of its strategic missile fleet, and cost the Kremlin an estimated $7 billion.
The operation unfolded just one day before renewed peace talks in Istanbul, where Ukraine sent its defense minister, but Russia only dispatched a junior aide. Kyiv has offered a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, while Moscow continues demanding Ukrainian capitulation.
The massive drone strike underscores Russia’s vulnerability and has embarrassed President Vladimir Putin, according to Western analysts. “This may not change the course of the war,” said Sven Biscop of the Egmont Institute, “but it does mean that every gain Russia makes will be at high cost.”
While President Donald Trump has attempted to broker talks, his shifting stance has frustrated allies. Trump warned he may abandon mediation if quick results aren’t achieved, even as Russia launched over 500 drones into Ukraine in retaliatory attacks.
