Shawn Fain, head of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, believes Vice President Kamala Harris at the top of the Democratic ticket boosts their chances of winning Michigan and retaining the White House. In an interview with The Associated Press, Fain criticized former President Trump for being beholden to billionaires and not supporting the working class or unions.

“Trump has never supported working class people. He has never supported unions,” Fain said. Fain has become a frequent target of Trump, who calls him an idiot and claims Fain’s support for electric vehicles risks auto jobs.

Michigan, a key swing state, saw Trump narrowly win in 2016 but lose by a larger margin to Biden in 2020. The UAW’s endorsement of Harris could influence the state’s significant union vote.

During the Republican convention, Trump inaccurately claimed Chinese auto companies are building factories in Mexico to ship vehicles tariff-free to the U.S. Fain dismissed Trump’s attacks, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to electric vehicles and noting Biden’s efforts to support autoworkers.

Fain supports Harris as a strong advocate for labor, citing her involvement in past union struggles. The UAW prefers Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear for Harris’s running mate but will back Harris regardless of her choice.

Trump’s campaign responded by calling Fain “a puppet for the Democrat party,” asserting Trump’s commitment to American autoworkers.
