U.S. President Joe Biden announced plans for a military airdrop of food and supplies into Gaza, aiming to address the humanitarian crisis following the deaths of Palestinians queuing for aid. This decision comes after other countries, such as Jordan and France, have undertaken similar airdrops. The initiative underscores the U.S. commitment to increasing aid to Gaza, with the first airdrop expected to include military MREs (meals ready-to-eat).

The White House emphasized the effort as sustained, not a one-time event, and is exploring a maritime corridor for more substantial aid delivery. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire, with a quarter of its population on the brink of famine and over 100 people killed near Gaza City while attempting to reach a relief convoy.

The U.S. military is preparing for the airdrops, possibly utilizing C-17 and C-130 aircraft, known for their capability in such missions. The efforts come amidst discussions of a temporary ceasefire, hoped to be in place by the start of Ramadan on March 10, to facilitate aid delivery. However, concerns remain about the effectiveness of airdrops in addressing the root causes of Gaza’s suffering and ensuring aid reaches those in need without falling into Hamas’ hands. The Biden administration is also considering sea shipments of aid from Cyprus to complement the airdrops.
