U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported 271,484 individuals in fiscal year 2024, marking the highest number in nearly a decade and a 90% increase from the previous year. The report, covering October 2023 to September 2024, highlights a 276% rise in deportations compared to 2022, with individuals sent to 192 countries. About 33% of those deported had criminal charges or convictions, while less than 1% of arrests were linked to homicides.
The increase comes as Republicans criticize President Biden for being lenient on border enforcement, while President-elect Trump has pledged to intensify deportation efforts. ICE Deputy Director Patrick J. Lechleitner described the year as one of “monumental changes,” noting that the agency operated with limited funding and resources while managing competing priorities.
