Seventeen countries joined the U.S. in voting against a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, more than doubling the opposition from a similar 2023 vote. President Donald Trump’s administration marked a shift in U.S. policy, as he has declined to blame Russia, questioned U.S. spending on the war, and criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, Trump indicated he was open to meeting with Zelensky soon.
The 16 countries that voted alongside the U.S. and Russia were Israel, Haiti, Hungary, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Burkina Faso, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Niger, Sudan, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Eritrea, Mali, and Nicaragua.
China abstained but reaffirmed support for Russia. President Xi Jinping called Russia a “true friend” following a video call with President Vladimir Putin.
