Two staff members from the Israeli Embassy in the United States were fatally shot Wednesday evening outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The victims, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were leaving an embassy-related event when a gunman opened fire on a group of four people, according to Police Chief Pamela Smith.
The alleged shooter, Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, was reportedly seen pacing near the museum before the attack and entered the building afterward. Security detained him until police arrived. As he was taken into custody, Rodriguez shouted, “Free, free Palestine.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed the victims’ identities, noting their work supporting diplomatic and educational missions. Law enforcement officials stated there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The attack has prompted heightened security at Israeli missions worldwide amid Israel’s renewed military actions in Gaza. President Trump condemned the killings as antisemitic, writing, “Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.”
