In May, former President Donald Trump’s fundraising surged, erasing President Joe Biden’s cash lead as they prepare for a potential rematch. Trump’s campaign reported $116.6 million in the bank, surpassing Biden’s $91.6 million. This spike followed Trump’s New York trial and conviction, significantly boosting his donations.
Trump and the Republican National Committee raised $141 million in May, including substantial contributions in the days surrounding the conviction. In contrast, Biden raised $85 million but spent over $30 million, focusing on campaign infrastructure and media buys.
Pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Again Inc. raised nearly $70 million, with major donations from GOP donors like Timothy Mellon. Biden’s campaign, while rebounding, still faces high expenses, outspending Trump significantly in several areas.
Down-ballot races are also intensifying. The National Republican Congressional Committee outpaced its Democratic counterpart in May fundraising, benefiting from the post-verdict surge. Senate Republicans similarly outraised Senate Democrats, though Democrats maintain a slight cash advantage.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) continued its influence in Democratic primaries, with substantial funds directed towards candidates like George Latimer and Wesley Bell. AIPAC’s financial involvement underscores its priority races and significant spending impact.
